The new-build lighting playbook

Most of Olathe's housing went up in the last few decades, from the established blocks near the historic downtown square and the Mahaffie stagecoach site out to Cedar Creek's lake-and-trail neighborhoods on the west side. New builds have a signature geometry — two-story entries, steep front gables, builder-neutral siding — and there's a right way to light every piece of it:

• The tall entry. That two-story front arch is your house's exclamation point. Outline it and it carries the whole facade.
• Stacked gables. Trace each one fully or skip it entirely — half-lit gables read as unfinished from the street.
• Neutral siding. Builder beige and greige are a gift: crisp white LEDs pop against them, and multicolor stays vivid instead of muddy.
• Young trees. Until the maples grow up, lit bushes and a wrapped entry tree do the yard work.
