Christmas Light Installation around the Country Club Plaza

The Plaza district is unusual for Kansas City: Spanish and Moorish architecture, tile roofs, towers, wrought iron and arcaded storefronts, all laid out on a compact grid between Brush Creek and the hill that climbs south toward the Country Club District. Nothing about it is standard suburban geometry, and nothing about lighting it is a package-sheet job.

We do not install the Plaza Lights themselves — that display belongs to the shopping district and its own crews. What we do is everything around it: the condo and apartment buildings along Ward Parkway and Wornall, the Spanish-revival and Tudor houses climbing the hill south and west, and the independent shops, restaurants and offices on the streets feeding into the district.

On these blocks the display is judged against a skyline of lit towers. Warm white, evenly spaced, on the real architecture — that is the only look that holds up.

Practically, the district brings its own problems. Tile and clay roofs will not take a staple and should not take a ladder in the wrong place. Balconies, terraces and rooftop spaces need light that reads from the street rather than blinding the person standing on them. Parking is tight and access windows are short, which is why we schedule Plaza work deliberately rather than squeezing it between suburban routes.

For businesses in and around the district, holiday light is footfall. We install after close, we check the display through the season, and we take it down in January so a burnt-out run never sits over your door during the busiest six weeks of your year.
